Últimamente, probablemente por la falta de tiempo, he encontrado una nueva manera de tomar apuntes rápidos sobre las ideas que me rondan por la cabeza. El proceso de escritura de un guión es un parto largo, con una gestación larga. Normalmente lo primero que me viene a la cabeza son imágenes inconexas, que con el tiempo van tomando forma. Después intento buscar un nexo de unión, una estructura. Me he inspirado en los Imageboards en la animación, que son como tomar unas escenas claves y dibujar un plano, a modo de post it. Luego los dispones en un orden concreto y ¡ualá! tenemos estructura, o sea, narrativa. Sobre estas líneas un posible comienzo de las andaduras de Matilda.

Lately, probably because of the lack of time, I found a new way to take notes that are inside my head in no time. Writing a scripts it's a hard task, and requires time, to grow the ideas, the images and the words inside you. In my case I just start with vague images that later I try to find a connection between them. I get inspired in the Imageboards from animation, that takes key scenes and draw a single shot, just like a memo. Once you have the images you put them in a particular order and wow! here comes the narrative. Over this lines it's a posible start for Matilda's adventures.

Primer intento de entintado en Illustrator desde un dibujo a mano alzada. Después de ver cómo se manejan algunos intenté emularlo. Es curioso como la linea (que son vectores) se modula con tanta suavidad.

First try inking with illustrator from a handmade sketch. It's so nice and sweet to draw vector lines, and you always can retouch them if you are not satisfied.

Durante una hora, estos chicos no dejaron de sorprenderme con su talento y su espontaneidad. Escucharon atentos los pasos a seguir de cómo dibujar a Matilda y Bouru y crearon sus propias versiones, cada una de ellas especial y muy particular.
Después leimos juntos un texto, y mientras lo leíamos apuntábamos en la pizarra los elementos importantes de éste para ver cómo podíamos ilustrarlo.

Fue toda una experiencia. Espero reencontrarme con ellos en otra ocasión. ¡Un fuerte abrazo!

1/ Where are you from? When it's your birthday?

I'm from Kansas City, Missouri, smack dab in the middle of the USA. Birthday is January 21 1975.

2/ Why Paper Toys? Did your parents prohibited you to play with scissors when you were little?

I love paper toys because they can be shared across the world, anyone with a printer and some time to waste can participate!
My parents let me have scissors, and crayons and pencils and markers ect. that's why I'm doing what I do today.

3/ Which are you studies, and how did you get to that Paper point?

I studied illustration and graphic design in school, I didn't really do anything with paper design till after school. I was board at work one day turned over a plastic cup on my desk drew a face on it and started gluing paper hands and feet to it. Then I did this everyday to recycle my cup and pretty soon I was making little paper cars and lots more advanced paper parts, about that same time I came across papertoys online and paper took over!

4/ There are any reference/inspiration for your work?

I think my work is pretty inspired by the cartoons and cartoonist I grew up loving and emulating and artist like you I get the pleasure of collaborating with. With the internet there is an amazing opportunity to see work and share work from all over the world, it's a very inspiring time to be a visual artist.

5/ Can you give some advices to the reader before starting to cut themselves with the cutter?

Patience and more patience. Oh yeah and keep away from fire and water :P

6/ In your homepage custompapertoys.com there are a lot of monsters and characters, which one are you most proud off?

I'm always most excited about the next one. Each papertoy I do I learn something new that sprouts the idea for the next one. I love it when technical solutions and creative ideas come together and serve one another. So my favorite one is always the one I'm working on next!

7/ Whats your Paper Toy dream? Any plan for the Guinness Records?

I'm living the dream. At my day job I design papertoys and at night I get to make papertoys for fun and share them with good people all over the world. What could be better than that?

Conocí a MissPepperCat en las 24 horas de Angoulême. Es el festival de comics más reconocido, allí se realizan muchas actividades relacionados con la BD (comics en francés). Entre ellas las más épica y bastante reciente es la de dibujar durante 24 horas un tebeo, con el tema dado cinco minutos antes de empezar, así que no tienes tiempo de preparar nada y todo tiene que salirte de la iluminación. Este año el tema escogido fue Popeye y había que dibujar 22 tiras más cubiertas. Algunos, no muchos, conectaron la webcam y podias meterte en su estudio o en la habitación de su casa y ver como trabajaban. De entre todas las cámaras que pude ver, la de MissPepperCat era la más divertida y entretenida. Trabajaba con una música infernal (refiriéndome a marchosa) mientras interactuaba con la gente que entraba. A raíz de esto se cruzaron los primeros emails. Ella es la responsable que me creara una cuenta en Deviant Art, y además nos dedica esta estupenda ilustración ¡Gracias!

I knew MissPepperCat at the 24 hours of Angoulême, the famous comic festival. Of all the activities that are organized, the most epic of them is the 24 hours. You have to draw about a subject, give it to you at the moment of the start. This year the subject was Popeye. There were a few people that connected the webcam and let you go inside his/her studio and look how they work. Of all the webcams MissPepperCat was de funniest and more entertaining. They were a pair of young artist who worked together at a rythm of a great music and very happy attitude. After that we crossed few emails. She was the responsable one that I create an account in Deviant art, plus, she drew this fabulous illustration for us to enjoy. Thanks a lot!

I think it was when i got my first pencil! i can remember the portrait of my mother i did when i was in my very first classroom! lol

About my studies ... hehehe... i finish Highschool and next i went to a private school to learn how to make manga but it was not my best choice, and not a great experience but i learnt some stuff with some great professional so it's ok. I quit after only one year, it cost me a lot of money so i decided to do it by myself.

4/ Name 5 references/inspirations for your work (media or artist)

I hate those kind questions it's really hard to choice! i guess Clamp, Barbucci, Dustin Nguyen, Katsura Hoshino,Van Hamme... I dunno i'm too curious and i love too much artist or style for just giving five lol

5/ What are your main tools for work and why?

Mechanical pencil with blue lead (0.9mm otherwise i break the lead everytime) because my sketches seem cleaner with it!

6/ What are your recent works, and where we can find them?

There's a lot i guess (all my life is drawing) so you can find it on devart [link] or on my blog [link]

7/ What's your professional dream? What do you pursuit?

My dream is to be a great comic artist, to see my comics on a shop i think i'm gonna cry if it happens but whatever! I'll be hiding myself in the shop to see the reaction of the reader, and maybe my art could touch people, and this day i would the happiest girl in the world!

Desde que estoy metido con el dibujo digital, en mis ratos libres, me ha sorprendido lo sencillo que resulta componer una ilustración en base a masas de color, prescindiendo de líneas. Se hace más fácil el juego de la composición y de las luces, además, tardas mucho menos en ver resultados. Para el boceto de la izquierda no dediqué más de 20 minutos.

Since I started using the digital path to make an illustration, I get surprised how easy was to use color and shapes, and not lines, to make a sketch and compose the illustration. For me it was a great discovering that really make me work faster and have better results in no time. For the sketch on the left I just spent less than 20 minutes.

Para que esto sea posible debería entregar las 190 páginas que consta la obra, a finales de octubre. En los próximos meses daremos más info.

This is the publishing date planned by Delcourt for the release of "Le Fugitif", a graphic novel I've been working for a year and a half now, with writer and journalist Sophie Ansel. For that purpose I should have all the final pages for the end of october, all the 190 pages of it. We will give more info in the next months.

Después de los 60 de mi tío y de mi padre en el 2010, este fin de semana celebrábamos los 60 de mi tía.

Esta vez, como la anterior, también con fiesta sorpresa. Mis tíos pasaban el fin de semana en Andorra tranquilamente y no se esperaba que subiéramos los 32 familiares y amigos que llegamos a reunirnos en la sala de fiestas del hotel, sin ella saberlo.

Para la ocasión preparamos unas caretas de mi tía Charo que todos llevábamos puestas para darle la sorpresa, el lema era "Todos queremos ser como Charo". Lágrimas y bailes se entremezclaron al vernos todos allí.

Después de la cena teníamos la mañana preparada con actividades en la nieve dónde todos compartíamos un buen rato desquitándonos de la adrenalina con las motos de nieve, el coche oruga o el tombotronc. Ya después, en el viaje de vuelta paramos para una escudella calentita para recuperar las energías.

En definitiva, un fin de semana genial que será difícil de olvidar, una estupenda forma de celebrar los 60.

La isla de los Ladrones es un largometraje ideado por Ruy Balañá e Iván Morales, del cual he tenido el placer de trabajar en la parte gráfica del desarrollo con algunos dibujos.

Este marzo de 2011, hay una importante convocatória a nivel nacional para premiar (más bien subvencionar) la escritura de un guión. Acabamos de terminar los dossiers para poder repartirlos a diestro y siniestro.

Ayer de madrugada no podía dormir y me puse a juguetear con mi vieja Graphire 2. Uno de mis primeros dibujos hechos totalmente con el ordenador.

Yesterday night I couldn't sleep. So I start playing around with my old Graphic Tablet (it's very very old, a Graphire 2). It's one of my first drawings totally made with computer.

Tim Blaze se quedó en la recámara. Pero al menos me puedo tomar mi café con leche con el Escuadrón Victoria al completo. Solo hay dos, una para el menda y otra para mi padre, que me ayudó a desgranar el guión.

Bonjour Paris - III Aniversary

¡Bonjour Paris ya se ha hecho mayor! Al menos para comer papillas...

El tebeo salió a la calle a finales de Enero del 2008, aunque en la página de créditos marque marzo. Ha pasado el tiempo y aunque me da repelús ver según que páginas, la verdad es que le tengo mucho cariño.

• ¿Por qué este post ahora?

El contrato de los derechos de autor con la editorial Dibbuks está a punto de finalizar. Hablé con Ricardo Esteban (editor de Dibbuks) y me comentó que este año tenían un stand en Angoulême (el salón del cómic más importante de Europa o del mundo, si cabe) y que planeaba llevarse la mayor parte de su catálogo para intentar vendérselo a los franchutes.

Bonjour no tiene muchos números, entre que el dibujo/color es un tanto estridente y después, que no se habla muy bien de los funcionarios franceses... no creo que les de por editar semejante obra.

Otra noticia. Lo más probable es que haya una segunda distribución del tebeo próximamente y podría ser que esta vez llegara a los ¡kioscos!. Así que si no te hiciste con tu ejemplar, podrás conseguir uno bien pronto.

X-Raichel o el proyecto puente

X-Raichel y la fantástica fantástica familia Curie, fue un proyecto clave para mí. Después de publicar Bonjour Paris y mientras aún trabajaba como diseñador gráfico freelance, preparé varios proyectos para Francia con la intención de buscarme la vida como autor de cómics. Era lo que había oído, que aquello era el paraíso.

Eso sí, me cansé de recibir negativas de todos lados. Pero deduje que aquello era parte de mi aprendizaje.

Este proyecto llamó la atención a la editorial Delcourt. Me dijeron, por eso, que tenían muchas series similares a mi propuesta en su línea editorial. Me preguntaron si estaba interesado en dibujar el guión de otra persona, de temática totalmente distinta a esto. Al parecer el editor había pensado en mí, por mi forma de narrar en los storyboards. A día de hoy aún me pregunto como hizo la conexión para proponerme el proyecto, pero vamos, todos estamos contentos.

X-Raichel and the fantastic Curie family, was a key project for me. But I figured that it was part of my learning.This project drew attention to the publisher at Delcourt. They said, therefore, that many series were similar to my proposal in its editorial. They asked me if I was interested to draw the script of another person, completely different from this topic. Apparently the editor had thought of me, because my way of telling the story in the storyboards. Podemos erradicar la pobreza 2015

Recientemente hubo un concurso internacional para diseñar un cartel para Erradicar la pobreza en el 2015, algo en que gobiernos de todo el mundo se había comprometido. El premio era cuantioso y numerosas personas de diferentes ámbitos del diseño, la ilustración y la fotografía participaron. Me rondaba una idea por la cabeza, pero no supe resolverla satisfactoriamente. Finalmente no me presenté al concurso. Aquí tenéis lo que hice antes de retirarme.

Recently there was an international competition to design a poster to eradicate poverty in 2015, something that governments around the world had been compromised. The award was big money and many people from different areas of design, illustration and photography were involved. I had an idea, but did not know how to resolve it satisfactorily. I finally didn't submitted it to the contest. Here's what I did.

Nacimiento, exploración y estancamiento de una idea

Es inevitable que si uno coge la costumbre de dibujar y apuntar todo lo que se le ocurre, salgan churros, semichurros y toda una retahíla de cosas extrañas sin nombre.
Pero alguien me dijo que lo importante era dejarlo por escrito, siempre se aprende, aunque sea el hecho de transferir una idea a un papel.

De viaje en tren a ver a mi familia en Gavà, escribí esto:

El pueblo de escuderos
Un pueblo sufre unas constantes lluvias de piedras del cielo.
Los ESCUDEROS son soldados entrenados que utilizan enormes escudos para repeler las piedras que caen con sus propios brazos. Sobre el pueblo hay un enorme y resistente techo, donde los soldados se suben cuando empiezan las lluvias.

Existía otro pueblo como éste pero se rindió ante el esfuerzo de tener que resistir aquella maldición. Éste pueblo se refugió en el interior de la tierra, excavando túneles y túneles. Al pasar los años este pueblo subterráneo se volvió más primitivo más salvaje. Al no poder cultivar o cazar sus propios alimentos organizaban expediciones en manada para atacar al otro pueblo que sí continuaba resistiendo las continuas lluvias de piedra.

Es bastante ilegible, pero tal vez podía llegar a alguna cosa. Por la tarde dibujé lo siguiente:

En estas páginas intentaba representar las imágenes clave de la idea para ver si podía funcionar.
Son dibujos que me encanta hacer, pero ahí todavía no hay historia. Tenía que intentar desarrollar más el setting para ver las diferentes posibilidades de crear una historia.

Esto es un caótico planning de lo que podría pasar para desarrollar la historia. Las preguntas como "¿Qué hará el héroe de la historia? ¿Tendrá que investigar el origen de la lluvia de piedras? ¿Tendrá que infiltrarse en el pueblo subterráneo para rescatar a una hermosa chica y encontrar miles de tesoros?" ayudan a definir hacia que derroteros se dirigirá la historia. O bien, también a hundirte en la confusión.

A veces las ideas son como las plantas, necesitan tiempo y paciencia para florecer.

Mi papá Rockero y su 60 cumpleaños

Para el 60ª cumpleaños de mi Papá la liamos gorda.
Después de una comida con amigos y familiares y cuando se disponía a volver a casa, lo llamamos para que acudiera a toda prisa en al garage de mi hermano, dónde le esperaba toda la gente para darle una sorpresa.
Allí lo disfrazamos de Jimi Hendrix con un peluquín y un conjunto de lo más hippy-friki.
El regalo principal era una guitarraza, una Fender Telecaster. Toda su banda estaba allí lista para tocarnos sus mejores versiones de los Creedence.
Detrás del improvisado escenario, lucía la banderola (de 2,5 m de ancho) que podéis ver más arriba.
Creo que todo el mundo se lo pasó bien y fue una fiesta digna de recordar.

Para el X Aniversario del portal de chollos Atrápalo, me encargaron la divertida tarea de dibujar un cómic con los personajes (sí, son unos personajes) creadores de la web. Para ello me mandaron fotos y un breve listado de anécdotas para que pudiera construir las caricaturas.

Fue divertido. Gracias a Judit por el "gancho".

Dobel Freeze is a tough guy. An old dog. Tired and exhausted of the city and his cruel crimes. He just found that everything worth it at the moment he grabs by the balls to the murderer of his case. He doesn't stand wasting time, neither paperwork.
